Diapers, Bottles, & A Few “Warm Moments”

6/21/2011

Strange title for a blog but seems to be my story at this stage of my life. You see, today I turn 46-years old and while one might think that I’m over the diapers and bottles, I now have a precious 4 month old grand daughter. My youngest son (Austin) has a sweet little baby... Layla has brought so much joy into our lives but I wasn’t exactly prepared for the “baby” phase again. I wasn’t prepared for my 16-year old son to become a daddy. I knew it was going to be a difficult journey... one that I was all too familiar traveling! Austin has accepted the responsibility quite well and he adores his daughter. She is at our house several days/nights throughout the week but mostly lives with her mother and grandmothers. When she is with us, Austin takes primary care of her but we all (me; my husband, Allen; and daughter, Chelsea) enjoy sharing in this. Last week, Austin was out of town and we told him we would take care of Layla on his regular scheduled days/nights. It was so fun but one day as I was rocking her, I noticed this overwhelming heat... a warmth that started deep inside me. I was so hot and sweating all of sudden. I was just sitting there burning up! My daughter said “mom, face it, you’re having a hot flash.” I quickly told her “NO” there was no way that could be happening... I’m way too young for that! Besides, it’s 98 degrees outside, who wouldn’t be hot? But we were inside a cool air conditioned house and she was sitting there under a blanket. I’ll admit it’s odd but I’m not quite ready to call it “hot flashes.” That just sounds so menopausal! I choose to call them “warm moments” for now, at least. So, here I am, 46 years old... changing diapers, making bottles, rocking a baby and having a few “warm moments.”

The next part of my journey is going to be interesting and I’ve decided to make it the best yet... even if it is a little warm and I have to sweat my way through it!
